How to Track Sports Bets in Units
Tracking your bets in units instead of currency is the single biggest upgrade most recreational bettors can make. It removes ego, normalises bankroll size and lets you compare results honestly against any other bettor — yourself a year ago included.
What is a betting unit?
A unit is a fixed percentage of your bankroll — typically 1%. If your bankroll is €1,000, one unit is €10. If your bankroll grows to €1,500, one unit becomes €15. The unit scales with the bankroll; the bankroll never scales to the unit.
When a tipster posts a 2u play, they're saying "stake 2% of your bankroll on this." That instruction is meaningful to a €100 punter, a €10,000 punter and a syndicate alike — because the risk is expressed in relative terms.
Why units beat currency
Apples-to-apples comparisons
A +€500 month means nothing without knowing the stake size. +12 units is the same return whether you bet €5 or €500 a unit.
Removes ego and tilt
Talking in units takes the dollar signs off the screen. You stop chasing losses to 'get the money back' and start judging decisions on quality.
Honest ROI and yield
Profit / units staked × 100 = yield. A serious bettor is happy with 3–5% yield over hundreds of bets. Currency totals hide that.
Auto-scales with bankroll
Recompute your unit once a month. Up 30%? Your stakes grow with you. Down 30%? They shrink — protecting you from ruin.
How to size your unit
- Define your bankroll — money you can afford to lose, completely separate from rent, savings or anything you'd regret losing.
- Pick a unit size as a percentage. Most sharps use 1%. Cautious bettors use 0.5%. Anything above 2% is high-variance — expect deep drawdowns.
- Stake in fractions of a unit based on edge: 0.5u for low-confidence plays, 1u for standard, 1.5–2u for the strongest spots. Never go beyond 3u on a single bet.
- Recalculate your unit on a fixed cadence (monthly) — not after every win or loss.
The metrics that actually matter
Units won/lost (Profit)
Sum of profit in units across all settled bets.
Yield / ROI
Profit ÷ total units staked × 100. The number sharps live by.
Win rate at average odds
Tells you whether your edge is real once odds are factored in.
Closing line value (CLV)
Beating the closing line consistently is the single strongest signal that you have an edge.
Why The Odds Club is built around units
Every pick on TOC is published in units. Every scoreboard, leaderboard and private league ranks members in units. You'll never see money figures used to flex — only transparent unit-based results, win rate and ROI over time.
Upload a screenshot of your bet slip and our OCR logs the bet in units automatically. Settle it, and your personal tracker recomputes yield, streaks and bankroll curve in real time.
